Sting - Infection controle in the developing world

“Annually 21 million hepatitis B infections, 2 million hepatitis C infections and 260,000 HIV/AiDS cases may be caused by re-use of syringes and needles without sterilization and that 5% of new HIV infections in developing and transitional countries may be attributable to unsafe healthcare injections”
The World Health organization (WHO)

Project back ground

In the developing world, the intentional re-use of needles and syringes in vaccination procedures contributes significantly to the spread of blood-borne infections. The focus of the concept is to replace the current injection hardware with a tamper proof cartridge based system.

The intentional recycling of needles contributes significantly to such needle stick exposures to blood borne pathogens such as HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis B and C. It is not uncommon for needles that are intended only for single use, to be used several times, significantly increasing the risk of spread to previously uninfected individuals and vastly increasing the numbers contaminated in this way.

Project currently in development at Design London.
